Identifying Wasps In the Las Vegas Area

First, let’s talk about some of the more common wasps that we see in Southern Nevada. The most common wasp that we may see around Las vegas area, is the paper wasp. The paper wasp is characterized by their red, yellow, and black colors. Paper wasps are commonly called Umbrella wasps as well. Like all wasps, paper wasps are defensive and they will become very aggressive if they feel disturbed. Wasps have the ability to sting multiple times, which can cause severe damage, especially to people who are allergic to wasp and bee stings.

How To Identify Wasp Nests

These wasps make their nests by chewing wood, which when mixed with their saliva, makes a sort of paper mache. The color of the paper wasp nest varies depending on what kind of tree the “paper” is made of; varying from gray or brown.

Wasp nests can be commonly found resting on eaves, soffits, and gutters on home exteriors, which make for great nesting spots because they are elevated and out of the way.

Properties that have a pest infestation of another sort, ants, spiders, or an abundance of other insects may see more wasps activity as well. Wasps are attracted to yards, gardens, patios, and other outdoor areas where food, plants, and other insects (also food) may be found.

Wasps may also be attracted by crumbs, soda spills, and garbage that is left uncleaned. Because of this it is important to throw away garbage and keep garbage covered up. Any source of food for wasps will attract them, so it is also important to empty garbage cans regularly so that they do not linger.

Properties with abundant insects and spiders provide ample prey for both developing and mature wasps. Contrary to popular, but inaccurate beliefs, nests left behind by wasp populations that die during the cold weather months are generally not reused by subsequent generations of wasps.

What To Do If You Find A Wasp Nest in House

There are DIY (do-it-yourself) products on the market that promise to treat pest infestations, but these often have little effect on stinging insects while still containing pesticides and chemicals that can be harmful to pets and humans alike. Don’t be that “DIY Guy”. When is it safe to remove a wasp nest? The answer is never, unless you’re a certified, licensed, and experienced professional.

Your best bet is to count on the pest control professionals at Tri-X Pest Management. Our integrated pest removal services include inspection, wasp nest removal, exclusion, and education to help ensure that once the pests are gone, they stay done.
